MUDDY AT HARU£n.

With a track knee deep with sloppy mud and
a drizzling rain falling the entire afternoon it is
no wonder that the racing at Harlem Friday
was tame and devoid of interest It is amazing,
however, how the crowds keep np, and despite
all the drawbacks to the enjoyment of racing
abont S.OOO regulars and steady patrons of the
sport were on hand.

Tom Barrett’s George Kinney— Alma H, flliy,
Brownie Anderson, won the bast race of the day,
and in doing so displayed rare gameness. The
filly’s long snit is mad, and with only 100
pounds on her back she appeared to have a
great chance to beat Nettie Regent, Ida Led-
ford and Avenstoke, and at 4t to 1 Ur. Barrett
and bis friends backed her well. Flcrinel II.
was nut conceded a chance by the talent, and
went to the post begging at 20 to 1.

This same Florinel II. is a mnd lark from
away back and possesses considerable speed.
She was fortunate in getting a flying start and
it made Brownie Anderson do her best to win
and then it was only a nose victory and so very
close that only tbs jadgea cguld tell correctly
which ttlly had won. McQuade rode Brownie
Anderson and bandied her to perfection. He
got away second, was always in a good position
and when the pinch came rode a powerfnl flu-
ish.

Nettie Regent was a 21 to 1 favorite for the
Brownie Anaerson race, but she got into a jam
shortly after the start and to keep from going
down Mitchell was compelled to pull her
almost to a standstill, and this , naturally
ruined wb ttever chance she had of winning.

Canace is possibly about the beat three-year-
old filly no w in training around here and Nick
Hall races her must consistently. The lllly pre-
fers a hard fast track but she can run in the
mnd if necessary, as was shown in the last race.
She had a fast lot to b)at and with the track
in the condition that it was, she seemed to be
np against a hard proposition and the ring
took liberties laying at post time 41 to 1. Mr.
Dwyer sent H. S. Tobacco away flying and he
aet a clicking pace with Canace always
within striking distance. In the stretch Wink-
field made his ran with Canace and below the
eighth post the filly passed the leader and from
there home simply cantereo. Tom Barrett
started Josephine B. in the Canace race and
bad a big combinatioa ending np on her for
second place. The flliy got away so badly that
she bad no chance and finished fifth.

Mand Wallace displayed a great fondness for
the mud in the mile for all ages, and at 7 to 1
she cantered in front all the way, winning easily
by three lengths. Sam Lazarns, the 8 to 5 fa-
vorite, was overweighted and finished fonrtb,

Vititoe beat tbe barrier with Oiekma, a 5 to 1
chance, in tbe initial four and a half fnrlong 2-
jear event and won away off by himself.

Nick Hall was extremely bnsy, and besides
winning with Canace, he also annexed a purse
to bts bank acconnt with Facade in tbe second
«vent. Facade broke eighth running, got to
tbe front abont the half-mile gronnd and re-
mainea there to the end. Mr. Johnson, tbe
odds-on favorite, was the runner np.

Innendo was always a good mnd rnnner and
with tbe greatest of ease he romped home six
lengths in front of Supreme and Warren Point
In tbe fifth event.

NOTES OF THE TUBF.

were pnrcbasad for Mr. W. C. Whitney of New

and Merry Thought), out of Blnegrass Belle, by
War Dance, purchased from Dr. W. A. Smith
of Canada; and The Belle (dam of Rensselaer
and Belle of Troy). The Belle is a fall sister to
Ray Belle, and was purchased from J, E. Mc-
Donald of New York.

Friday's Cincinnati Enquirer says: “Eugenia
Wickes, who in her day has held her own with
the bsst sprinters in the west, has been seen at
the post for the last time. Before the stake
race yesterday trainer Arthur Newsnm an-
nonnced that whatever the result of that race
might be it was Engenia Wickes’ last race.
She has become old and canning and having
ontlived her nsefnlness as a racemare she will
now be sent to Mr. Jnngblnth’s farm to take
her place in the stud.’’

Odom will not be seen in the saddle at Aqne-
dnct or Bennings. At least that is tbe present
intention of his father. Tbe boy is cot in tbe
best of health, and as his season has been a long
and hard one, it really seems as if be has earned
a rest. He expects to winter at bis parents’
home in Georgia. Early in the spring be will
go to Mr. Whitney’s farm to help gallop the
horses that will race next year.

A race meeting in connection with tbe State
Fair will begin at Birmingham, Ala., Novem-
ber 7. Col. W. R. Letcher has been engaged to
act as presiding judge and C. J. Fitzgerald will
do the starting. Gratz Hanly is managing tbe
racing department of the fair.

W .M. Barrick has pnrchased of J, E. Madden
tbe two-jear-old bay colt McMeekin, by Fonso
Daisy Rose. While tbe terms of the sale were
private, tbe colt is believed to have cost Bar-
rick in the neighborhood of $7,500.

J. H. McCormick, probably acting for L. V.
Bell, has pnrchased Radford from William
Lakeland It is not likely that tbe latter’s sns-
pension will affect the colt’s starting, as be has
never rcn in Lakeland's name.

Post 15 minutes Start ponr. Won cleverly. There was much aotiou behind the winner.
Winkfield rode well on Caoace and tbe filly raa one of her best racea. She is a consistent per-
former and when ridden like she was today, it takes a good horse to beat her in any kind of
going. H B. Tcbicco broke flying, had clear aailing and CO excuses. He is not game. Andes
was rsced into submission ebasing H, 8. Tobacco tbrongb the first half. Her Favor and Joseph-

equal break.
